When we first looked into beeswax wraps, we were a little confused. I didn't really see the point in them. I've always felt wary of 'strange' eco-friendly products, I've always assumed that functionality is somehow compromised and that it's a lot of faffing about. After a little research, I couldn't have been further from the truth.
In short, beeswax food wraps are a planet-friendly alternative to clingfilm. Except they're so much better! Made with simple and sustainable products (100% GOTS certified cotton, beeswax, organic jojoba oil and natural tree resin), they start their life as eco-friendly as they continue it. Furthermore, by requiring only cold water for washing due to their antibacterial nature, they reduce your chemical cleaner and hot water usage. As well as the obvious reduction your disposable plastic consumption, they also reduce food waste as they have a breathable quality, keeping food fresher for longer. If you've ever fallen victim to a sandwich being suffocated by cling film and ending up soggy and unappetising - then you may just need to make the switch.
What foods are they best for?
Sandwiches - the aforementioned breathability is perfect for your favourite lunchtime staple. Not only do they prevent sogginess, but they are perfect to flatten out and use as a mat to collect any crumbs before folding back away and putting back in your snack bag.
Cheese - we all know the struggle of trying to keep that one piece of cling film going, stretching it back out and failing to keep it covered. It all seems redundant anyway, as you know that the cling film is just going to make the cheese sweat and become unappetising the next time you go to use it. Beeswax wraps are a perfect solution for both problems!
Bread - not only are they fantastic to cover bread and prolong freshness, they are perfect to cover dough during the proving process while baking. From cooking to crumbs, these are a must have in your kitchen cupboards.
Loose snacks - they are the perfect weaning accessory, as they are self sealing for perfect on-the-go storage of loose snacks like nuts and cereals, and keep their fruit fresher for longer when unfinished or pre-sliced.
Vegetables - storing cut veg in plastic can leave them withered sooner than you'd like. We always cover our half-used lettuce heads in a beeswax wrap to keep them good for as long as possible!

What food should they not be used for?
Raw meat and fish - the only foods we advise against are raw meat and raw fish. As we advise washing in cold water, there is a small contamination risk with these items.
Hot food - do not use for any food that is warm or hot as this will melt the wax.
Highly acidic or oily food - avoid storing anything very acidic or oily for too long, as these can break down the wax and shorten the wraps' lifespan.
Mouldy food - if exposed to mould, you should re-pasteurise the wraps before their next use.
